making it through // Jessie’s Story

I was born into an abusive family; my parents hardly realized my sister and I were there. When they did notice us, they would just scream and lash out. I remember thinking: am I ever going to get out of this? Even though I didn't know God at the time, He knew me and was already answering my silent cries for help.

When I was seven, I went into foster care. My caseworker found a home that was Christian, and that experience changed everything for me. At that time, Church became the one good thing in my life—a refuge from the pain I had known. It was there that I began to think, "I want to be a follower of Jesus." There was a warmth and acceptance that I had never experienced before.

Now, I have the privilege of showing children the love of Christ, even though I didn't grow up knowing Him myself. Some kids think they would rather stay in the system, but I've come to understand that adoption is what God desires for us. I’m adopted twice: once into God's family, and now into my family here on Earth.

When we go through trials, it's God's way of giving us stories to share. I can tell mine now, knowing that He carried me through it all, turning my struggles into a testimony.
